CINEMA TO KASHMIR:

Two Britons recently embarked on a unique mission to Kashmir which focused on bringing back the smiles to the children who were traumatized by the devastating earthquake of October 8, 2005.

Theo Baines is a photographer and freelance researcher for BBC and Eugenie Reidy is an anthropologist. They both left their jobs to spend 10 weeks of their time among the children in Pakistan and Kashmir, as KIRF volunteers.

The two used a mobile "Cinema to Kashmir" to show 'funny' movies to children who spend their days in the camps scattered in the region.

The aim was to restore laughter and light to orphaned, injured and traumatised youngsters who had their childhoods stolen by one of the worst natural disasters in South Asia’s history.

Government and International Aid Agencies monitored this unique project to learn how to use these techniques to help victims in possible future disaster situations.

KIRF ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY TO CONSTRUCT SHELTERS FOR A FURTHER SIX VILLAGES IN BAGH | Working in coordination with the UN agencies, Pakistan Army and other NGO, KIRF has accepted sole responsibility to provide shelters for a further six villages surrounding the city of Bagh, Kashmir. Shelters in these six villages will provide emergency housing for more than 1,150 families (approx. 8000 people). This commitment is in addition to five villages with 1,500 families making up approx 10,000 people, already being catered for by KIRF (see report below).

KIRF is calling on individuals, groups, organisations, international charities / NGO's and government agencies to provide urgent additional funding for this truly life saving work. KIRF has the skills and capability to rapidly implement these shelter schemes on your behalf. Help us to reach more remote villages before the snows start. Please contact us today.

KIRF CONSTRUCTING EMERGENCY SHELTERS FOR 10,000 PEOPLE | With difficulties surrounding winterised tents and heavy winter snows just days away, KIRF has innovated and started to construct semi-permanent shelters with metal sheeting. Approx. 10,000 people in 1,500 families living in five villages surrounding the city of Bagh will benefit from these shelters. These shelters:

(a) are larger than tents with more room to move around.

(b) will be able to withstand heavy snows.

(c) will allow cooking and heating inside.

(d) are adaptable to the size small or large families.

(e) can be used for schools, medical camps or other purposes.

(f) are made from materials that can be recycled after the winter for permanent housing.

(g) are made from materials that are sourced from local suppliers and thus reviving the local economy.

KIRF has shared the design of these shelters with other charities and NGOs on the ground in Bagh with the hope of maximising the number of people that can be given shelter prior to the snows. Please contact us for more information about these shelters, either to construct them for your organisation or if you would like KIRF to construct these shelters on behalf of your organisation.
